FAO press release

We are pleased to inform you of the upcoming International Conference on Organic Agriculture and Food Security at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy from 3 - 5 May 2007. The objective of this conference is to evaluate the contribution of organic agriculture to food security through the analysis of existing information in different agro-ecological areas of the world. The goal is to provide a thorough assessment of the where we are in organics and where further research and policy work is needed. The final report of this conference will be submitted to the 33rd Session of the Committee on Food Security as background information for further action. The Conference is free of charge and open to interested colleagues, including government, civil society and private sector institutions involved with organic agriculture and food security.

In line with the objectives of this Conference, we are requesting your assistance in disseminating our Call for Papers. We are looking for short summaries (not exceeding 1000 words) that describe research results or case studies. Accepted papers, together with the four main Conference synthesis documents, will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Specifically, we are looking for large-scale studies that involve several hundred farmers from which meaningful lessons have been learned or case studies that feature either success or failures in organic agriculture. Paper conclusions should be made on opportunities and constraints offered by organic food supply systems to food security in the medium and long term and at different levels (household, local community, national and international).

We ask that papers be constructed in a manner that they focus on one of the four main food security dimensions: food availability, food access, food stability; or food utilization. Also indicate the main agro-ecological area to which the paper belongs: arid and semi-arid areas of uncertain rainfall; humid and per-humid lowlands; temperate and irrigated lands; or hill and mountain areas.

Papers contributed do not necessarily require the attendance of authors to the Conference. Papers should be sent to the Conference Secretariat (organicag@fao.org) by 1 March 2007.? Submitted papers will receive notice of acceptance. We appreciate you circulating this information and posting it on your respective e-networks. Sincerely,

Tara Moreau
