Barley is an annual grass (Hordeum vulgare), with many different stages of growth. In the first stages, the Barley resembles thick, lush grass, and is colored a rich, bright green. This is when the young Barley leaf blades have reached their nutritional peak and are often cut, then juiced or powdered for supplements. The grass then enters the "reproductive cycle," when it begins to form the grain.
