1. WSP ENVIRONMENTAL ACQUIRES ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES
WSP Environmental, the environmental consulting unit of WSP Group plc (London, U.K.), has acquired Environmental Strategies Consulting, LLC (Reston, VA) from Quanta Capital Holdings Ltd. ESC will
operate henceforward as WSP Environmental Strategies and will continue to be led by Jan Chizzonite, who will work alongside Chris Hazen, principal director of WSP Environmental’s existing U.S.
operations. Commented Stuart McLachlan, global managing director of WSP Environmental, “we aim to fully integrate ESC with both our existing U.S. business and the global business at the earliest
opportunity. These are exciting times for WSP Environmental, and the merging of talent represents a major step toward realizing our vision of becoming the leading globally integrated consulting
firm in the environmental and energy marketplace.”
2. GEI CONSULTANTS AND CHADWICK ECOLOGICAL CONSULTANTS MERGE
GEO Consultants (Boston, MA) and Chadwick Ecological Consultants and Chadwick & Associates, Inc. (Littleton, CO) have merged to form a $46-million geotechnical, environmental and water
resources engineering firm with 285 employees at 16 offices nationwide. With offices in Littleton and Tucson, Arizona, Chadwick Ecological is a full-service ecological consulting firm with
experience in the design, implementation, and management of aquatic studies throughout the United States since 1979. Chadwick & Associates’ ecological laboratory provides compliance- and
research-level aquatic toxicity testing, as well as nutrient analysis and biological sample analysis services.
3.ERM RE-BRANDS AND EXPANDS REMEDIATION PRACTICE
ERM (Exton, PA) announced that it has consolidated its remediation and construction management services and extended the service internationally, with an initial launch in Europe. Previously
operating as EnviroClean in North America, the re-branded practice is now named ERM Remediation & Construction Management (ERM RCM). The company said that, while its Contaminated Site
Management practice is already well established around the world, the expertise that ERM RCM brings will improve the cost-effectiveness of projects while ensuring accountability and financial and
technical security.
4. STARTECH SIGNS CONTRACT FOR PLASMA FACILITY IN PANAMA
Startech Environmental Corp. (Wilton, CT) announced that its exclusive Panamanian distributor Sicmar International Panama S. A. has signed a contract with the city of Las Tablas under which Sicmar
has secured the land and waste volumes required for the construction and operation of a Startech Plasma Waste Converter (PWC) facility. The new plant will be designed to process 200 tons of
municipal solid waste per day and will be the first of five to ten such facilities planned for operation in Panama. Commissioning for the Las Tablas facility is tentatively scheduled for early
2008.
5. GL&V WINS $18-MILLION ORDER FOR WATER SCREENING EQUIPMENT IN QATAR
Group Laperriere & Verreault, Inc. (GL&V; Montreal, Que.) has received an $18-million order for the water screening systems and associated equipment required for a major
seawater intake infrastructure project serving industrial facilities in the city of Ras Laffan, Qatar. According to GL&V, whose Water Treatment Group will deliver the equipment, the completed
infrastructure will constitute one of the largest seawater intake complexes in the world, delivering 200 tons of seawater per day to a power station, an oil refinery, a seawater desalination plant,
and several additional industrial facilities. GL&V’s Water Treatment Group, the former Eimco Water Technologies, generated $116 million in revenues during the 2006 fiscal year.
6. PARSONS JV CHOSEN FOR $211-MILLION SEATTLE CONVEYANCE PROJECT
In a joint venture with Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc., Parsons Corp. (Pasadena, CA) has received a $211-million contract from King County, Washington, to
build water conveyance infrastructure as part of the $1.6-billion Brightwater project. The scope of work will include the construction of two tunnels containing multiple carrier pipes each—one
extending from Kenmore to the North Creek Business Park in Bothell and another from Kenmore to Ballinger Way Northeast in Shoreline. The combined length of the tunnels will be about 32,000 feet.
Once completed, the Brightwater treatment system, which is the largest regional clean water project in more than 40 years, will serve 240,000 customers.
7. SOLARCITY TO RECEIVE $10 MILLION IN FINANCING
SolarCity Corp. (Foster City, CA), a provider of solar power systems and equipment, has signed a $10-financing agreement with entrepreneur Elon Musk to provide continued support for
the company’s operations, research and development, and marketing efforts. “Our installation quality and the economies of scale we plan to achieve will position SolarCity to be a leader in
photovoltaic systems installation projects,” said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive. “With this financing agreement we have the funding necessary to expand to new markets, launch a major marketing campaign
and develop innovative products that will lead to a sustained competitive advantage.”
8.EPA POISED TO SCALE BACK CLEAN-WATER GOALS
In a mid-year review of its Office of Water, EPA is claiming that the goal of ensuring the delivery of drinking water meeting all health-based standards to 95% of all Americans served by community
water systems (CWSs) by 2008 is a “major challenge” that may not be achievable. Key reasons for falling short of this goal include “significant annual population impacts from the largest systems”
such as turbidity violations by Puerto Rico’s largest water utility and New York City's “failure to filter” its Croton watershed supply, the agency said. EPA suggests that a “more realistic”
goal would be to ensure that 91% of the population receives drinking water meeting all health-based standards by 2011. The current figure is 88.4%.
9.EBJ BUSINESS ACHIEVER OF THE WEEK: HYDRO INTERNATIONAL
This week EBJ salutes Hydro International, which received a 2005 Technology Merit award for the development of the Up-Flo Filter for stormwater treatment. One of
the first products to be designed, developed and brought to market as part of the EPA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, the Up-Flo Filter is a high-rate, modular filtration
system designed to meet the most stringent stormwater treatment regulations. Originally conceived by one of the nation’s leading stormwater researchers, the Up-Flo Filter was re-engineered by Hydro
International’s research and development team to become a commercially viable product. The re-design maximized treatment capacity while minimizing footprint and the maintenance associated with
traditional radial or down-flow filters. According to the company, the unit’s compact design, high removal efficiencies, high treatment capacity and multiple treatment train capabilities make it
the most effective and economical filtration device available for stormwater treatment. Applications include new development and retrofits; catch basin or flow-through chambers; streets and
roadways; parking lots; vehicle maintenance wash-down yards; industrial and commercial facilities; wetlands protection; and utility yards.
